Bookeo turns another passion into profits

We recently caught up with Mark Murphy, owner and founder of Oyster Luxury Scuba Diving and Travel Centre. We wanted to find out how Bookeo has been helping to keep his London, UK, business well above water. 

Talking to Murphy, you’d never mistake him for fish food. But that’s exactly what a whale shark once did when the award-winning diving instructor was under the clear blue-green waters of Djibouti. He says it’s one of his favorite stories. 

Five whale sharks were swimming toward me, eating plankton,” Murphy recounts, “I couldn’t get out of the way, so I ended up in the mouth of one of them.”  

The vacationing London marketing man was hooked. Not by the shark (fun fact: whale sharks are vegetarians), but by the idea of turning his passion into a profitable business venture: Oyster Luxury Scuba Diving and Travel Centre.



How do you run a business from ten leagues under the sea, you ask?

Well, Bookeo. Five years ago, after vetting several other options, Mark started using Bookeo for his diving school’s online bookings and payments. He says he’s been happy with it ever since.


Simple to use, yet more robust


Like most smart entrepreneurs, Mark stays focused on his business and his customers.  “I’m not a web developer,” he says, continuing that he needs a system that’s “simple and straightforward so I can use it internally, and my staff can use it as well”. 

Before choosing Bookeo, Mark says that he tried three or four other online booking systems. “We did a couple of free tests with a few of the others,” he says, “They were not up to the job - or they were just too complicated.”

Oyster Luxury Scuba Diving’s primary target customers are high income professionals. With locations including Soho and nine other posh London neighborhoods, Mark has a large and demanding market. He says that his clients have money - but they’re often “poor” on time.

To book a lesson, his clientele used to have to send an email, “or they called us in the office.” Now, with Bookeo, Mark says they can find the service they want, learn what they need to know, and book their favorite time and place without any fuss, lost time, or even a phone call. 


SMS reminders: Good for cash flow


Mark says that Bookeo’s automatic SMS and email reminders have been a boon to his business - and to his cash flow. Although they want to learn how to scuba dive, sometimes Oyster Diving’s busy, affluent customers need these reminders to stay on schedule. 

Bookeo’s automatic reminders eliminate the aggravation of no-shows. Mark and his staff no longer lose any time spent rescheduling or explaining no-show policies to forgetful customers.   


Premium online booking for a premium diving service


According to Mark, there are about ten competing dive centers in and around London, but having a good online booking system “does definitely set us apart from our competitors.” Bookeo’s deceptively well-designed simplicity has the power to handle multiple offerings, instructors, and locations, and Mark believes it helps Oyster Luxury Scuba Diving stand out from the diving school crowd.

That “makes us look very professional. We definitely increased our revenue as a result.

Bookeo and Xero: Now Integrated

Xero users, rejoice! (Non-Xero users, there’s good news here for you too, so read on.)


We’re excited to announce that Bookeo now integrates with Xero, one of the world’s most popular online accounting systems.

You’re going to love how much this simplifies your life. Bookeo automatically syncs your customers, and payments to Xero. That includes:

  • bookings made by your customers and your Bookeo account users 
  • prepaid packages purchased online
  • memberships purchased online 
  • gift vouchers purchased online or created by your account users, when a payment is recorded

If you reschedule, cancel, or restore a booking, the Xero invoice is automatically updated to reflect your booking in Bookeo, whether you change the booked service, add options, increase or decrease the number of participants, and so on. You don’t have to lift a finger!

If you charge a credit card for a booking from Bookeo, or if you track a manual payment such as a cash payment, it’s automatically synced to Xero.

To print an invoice for a booking, simply open that booking in Bookeo and click on the Xero Invoice link to be redirected to the invoice in Xero. It’s that simple!

New feature: Tax exempt customers

Do you have any customers (nonprofit charities, for example) who are exempt from sales taxes?

Then you’ll love our newest feature, which lets you easily set certain customers as tax exempt. It’s been one of our most requested innovations in the last few months, so we’re really excited to launch it this week.



Now it’s easy to apply customized tax exemption status to any client. You can do this directly from your Bookeo calendar while you’re creating a booking, or do it right in the customer’s profile.

Multiple taxes or charges are no problem. For instance, if your business charges both sales tax and administration fees, you can specify the taxes from which the customer is exempt in one click.



Once you set a customer as exempt from specific taxes, Bookeo automatically knows not to add those taxes to that customer’s bookings. This exemption will apply whether you create the booking from your calendar or the customer makes the booking online.

Tax exemptions will also automatically be reflected in your reports. No value will show for specific taxes for tax-exempt customers, so you can effortlessly use your reports to see tax amounts collected from your customers.

Your Promotions: Now Easier and More Flexible


We are excited to announce a new release packed with features that will make the creation and management of promotions a breeze.

Management of rolling coupon expiration dates

Running a promotion with rolling coupon expiration dates will now be effortless.
When you upload your coupon list, if the second column of the list contains expiry dates, Bookeo will apply that expiry date when customers make a booking or when you create a booking from calendar.



Bookeo will also inform you or your customer if the coupon code can’t be applied to that booking because the coupon expires before the date of the appointment.

Change the expiry date of coupons

Sometimes you need to change the expiry date of a coupon code. Now you can do it with one simple click. When you click on the coupon code, you can change its expiry date and even set that it will never expire.

Manually add a coupon to a promotion (without uploading a file)

Now, you can manually add a coupon to a promotion (without uploading a file). You can manually input the coupon code and set its expiry date. You can even set that it will never expire.



Restrict days and times when a promotion is valid

If your promotion is valid only for bookings made on specific days and times of the week, for example 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, now you can simply set this validity from the promotion settings, without creating a special price.



Set if a promotion can be used to purchase gift vouchers

Sometimes you want to let customers use a promotion to make bookings and purchase gift vouchers, but sometimes you don’t want to offer that particular discount when customers purchase gift vouchers. Now, for each promotion you offer, you can set if it can be used to purchase gift vouchers.

Will I incur extra fees for the Appointments Anywhere integration?


You can use the integration without incurring in additional fees for 30 days. After that, there is a small fee of $2 per completed booking placed through the Appointments Anywhere network.

New feature: recover “lost” leads with remarketing

You know how it is. You’re in the middle of booking something, you get distracted, and you never finish.

That probably happens to a lot of your customers too. They’re clearly interested enough to place reservations in their booking carts, but for some reason they never complete the booking.

These hot prospects often only need a quick reminder or enticement to finish their booking, and guess what? Bookeo’s new remarketing feature makes it easy.



Now Bookeo can automatically send your own customized email to website visitors if they abandon the booking process. When new customers enter an email address but then do not complete the checkout process, your email will be sent to entice them to come back and complete their booking - in a period of time set by you. For example, 1 hour after the booking process is abandoned, you can ask if there's anything you can do to help.

Your automatic email can include a call to action with a direct link to your booking page to make it easy for customers to immediately click and complete their booking. This link will include a source tracking code that lets you see how many bookings you receive from your remarketing emails.

If you want, you can even offer a discount to entice these customers to complete their booking, by including a link to a special promotion.

It will be very easy to see how effective your remarketing campaign is: Bookeo's powerful statistics will show you how many remarketing emails were sent, how many converted to bookings and the conversion rate.
